Tía María Copper Project Moves Forward Amid Ongoing Social License Concerns

As of late May 2025, Southern Copper Corporation is advancing its Tía María copper project in Peru’s Arequipa region, with construction slated to commence in the first half of the year and commercial operations anticipated by 2027. The project’s budget has been increased to $1.8 billion, reflecting adjustments for inflation and expanded infrastructure plans. Once operational, the mine is expected to produce approximately 120,000 tonnes of copper annually and generate significant economic benefits, including an estimated $3.4 billion in taxes and royalties over two decades.
