Cerro de Pasco Transforms Historic Mining Waste

Cerro de Pasco Resources Inc. (CDPR) is advancing its Quiulacocha Tailings Project in Central Peru, aiming to reprocess approximately 75 million tonnes of historic mining waste deposited between the 1920s and 1990s. This initiative seeks to extract valuable metals such as silver, zinc, lead, copper, gold, and notably, gallium—a critical metal essential for electronics and renewable energy technologies. The project’s cost-effectiveness is notable, with tailings extraction estimated at $1–2 per tonne, significantly lower than traditional mining methods. Additionally, the project offers environmental remediation benefits by addressing acid water contamination from historic tailings.
