Peru: Linking CSR to Social License in Mining

A recent study published in Resources Policy examines the intricate relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the Social License to Operate (SLO) within Peru’s mining sector. The research focuses on three mining operations, analyzing how different CSR strategies influence community acceptance and trust. The findings indicate that companies adopting a normative stakeholder approach—prioritizing ethical obligations and long-term community well-being—are more successful in securing and maintaining their SLO. In contrast, firms that engage in transactional CSR activities without genuine community engagement often face resistance and social conflict.
