Africa’s Mining Sector Turns to Digital Platforms to Secure Social License to Operate

In 2025, African governments are accelerating digital reforms in mining governance to boost transparency and trust. South Africa is set to launch its first digital licensing platform to cut approval delays and modernize access to its gold and platinum sectors. Tanzania and Rwanda are already using similar systems to streamline oversight and connect regulators with mining firms. These platforms do more than improve efficiency—they allow communities and watchdog groups to track permits in real time, helping prevent corruption and reinforcing the Social License to Operate (SLO). By linking digitization with the African Mining Vision, countries aim to ensure mining generates local benefits and accountability.
