EU-Centric Framework: SLO Models for “Mine-of-the-Future”

In June 2025, the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA), in collaboration with universities in Sweden, Germany, and Spain, released a research-backed framework aimed at adapting the Social License to Operate (SLO) concept to the evolving context of Europe’s “Mine-of-the-Future” initiatives. As the EU pushes to revive domestic mining to reduce dependency on foreign critical minerals—particularly from China—the need for locally adapted SLO mechanisms has become urgent. The new framework integrates stakeholder mapping, procedural justice principles, and digital transparency tools into a modular model intended for EU-funded mining ventures.
