Mali’s Barrick Mine Awaiting Permit Renewal
On June 16, 2025, a Malian court placed Barrick Gold’s Loulo–Gounkoto complex under six months of state-appointed administration, temporarily sidelining the company. This followed the mine’s January shutdown after the government seized three tonnes of gold and suspended exports amid a tax dispute. A former health minister was named interim administrator to resume operations and generate state revenue. The mine historically contributes 14% of Barrick’s global gold output. At the center of the conflict is the pending renewal of the Loulo mining permit, expiring in February 2026. A 2023 mining code reform—raising royalties and state participation—has further intensified tensions.
