Balancing Energy Security and Emissions: Northeast Gas Expansion Moves Forward
On June 30, 2025, U.S. energy firms including Williams, Boardwalk Pipeline, DT Midstream, and EQT announced new natural gas pipeline expansions from Appalachia to the Northeast. The Marcellus and Utica basins produce a third of U.S. gas, yet bottlenecks have led to regional price spikes. Backed by relaxed federal permitting and growing LNG and power demands, the projects aim to boost supply security while navigating environmental concerns. The expansion reflects shifting priorities as policymakers balance emissions targets with energy reliability.
