Protest-Driven Halt of Lamu Coal Plant

Since late May 2025, residents and activists in Kenya’s Lamu County have led protests against the stalled Lamu coal-fired power plant. Grassroots groups like Save Lamu, alongside local elders, organized marches and sea-based demonstrations. Their concerns include environmental degradation, threats to fisheries and mangroves, and health risks from pollution. The project has faced legal and regulatory delays for years, but these protests intensified pressure for its cancellation. Protesters also invoked Kenya’s climate goals, arguing that coal contradicts a clean energy future. The movement reflects how local communities are reshaping the course of major infrastructure through sustained civic action.
