UK Withdraws Backing from $33 Billion Morocco–UK Power Cable
On June 26, 2025, the UK government pulled support from the Morocco–UK Power Project, a £25 billion plan to deliver Saharan renewable energy via 3,800 km of undersea cable. The project, led by Xlinks, aimed to power seven million homes. Citing delivery risks and geopolitical concerns, UK officials opted to shift focus toward domestic renewables. The decision reflects a broader strategy to support local industry, reduce foreign dependencies, and boost UK-based clean energy jobs. While Xlinks pledged to explore alternative financing, the setback casts uncertainty on one of Europe’s most ambitious green energy plans.
