World Bank Commits $1 Billion to Rebuild Middle East Infrastructure

On June 25, 2025, the World Bank approved over $1 billion to support post-conflict infrastructure in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon—the region’s largest multilateral package since 2018. The centerpiece is the $930 million Iraq Railways Extension and Modernization Project, aimed at restoring key trade and transit links between Umm Qasr Port and Mosul. The initiative seeks to boost regional integration, create jobs, and stabilize fragile economies. Smaller allocations will support power grid rehabilitation in Syria and water systems in Lebanon. The investment reflects renewed global focus on recovery through connectivity. Implementation will be closely tied to local governance and anti-corruption benchmarks.
