Solar Minigrid Lights Up Goma, Sets Example for Africa
In late June 2025, a 1.3 MW solar minigrid in Goma, DRC, emerged as a beacon of decentralized energy success in a conflict-affected region. Developed by Nuru and integrated with Virunga National Park’s hydropower system, the minigrid delivers reliable electricity to homes, small businesses, clinics, water-treatment facilities, and public lighting. The project not only boosts local resilience and economic activity but also serves as a scalable model for sustainable electrification across sub-Saharan Africa. Its success underscores the transformative potential of renewable energy in fragile contexts.
