From Feasibility to Development Commitment
On November 25, 2025, Caledonia Mining Corporation confirmed its decision to move forward with the development of the Bilboes Gold Project in Zimbabwe, following the completion of a positive feasibility study. Located in Matabeleland North, the project is planned as a large-scale open pit mine with estimated gold production of approximately 1.55 million ounces over an initial mine life of about 11 years. The company outlined an investment program of close to US$ 500 million, positioning Bilboes as one of the most significant new gold developments in the country in recent years.
Modern Processing for a Complex Orebody
Bilboes is a technically sophisticated project. The orebody is refractory in nature, requiring advanced processing technology to unlock value efficiently. To address this, Caledonia plans to deploy BIOX® technology, a proven bacterial oxidation process widely used in complex gold operations. This approach reflects a shift toward higher-standard, industrial mining solutions capable of extending mine life, improving recovery rates, and aligning with international operational benchmarks.
Why Bilboes Matters for Zimbabwe’s Mining Outlook
The advancement of Bilboes comes at a time of sustained global demand for gold and renewed interest in diversified supply sources. For Zimbabwe, the project represents an opportunity to reinforce gold’s role as a cornerstone of export revenue, attract long-term capital, and signal growing confidence in large-scale mine development. More broadly, Bilboes illustrates how brownfield assets, when paired with modern technology and clear investment commitments, can contribute meaningfully to Africa’s mining pipeline in a tightening global market.
